Mahfuz Anam a famous journalist, editor, publisher, who is in search of roots. A living legend in the world of newspapers and publications, the name Mahfuz Anam is widely discussed and praised in this country. Mahfuz Anam is the editor and publisher of celebrated paper ‘The Daily Star’. Due to his skilled management free from illusion, the Daily Star is now considered as the country’s most standard and authentic newspaper. In 1991, during inception of the Daily Star, he was Executive Editor and in the year 1993 he became the Editor. For a long time he was also the Publisher of the country’s one of the most popular Bengali daily ‘Prathom Alo’.

Mahfuz Anam was born in the year in 1950 in Mymensingh. Father Abul Mansur Ahmad was a renowned journalist and a politician. Mahfuz Anam obtained B.A. (Hons.) in Economics from the University of Dhaka in the year 1970 and M.A. in the year 1971.In student life, he received All Pakistan Debating Championship prize for three terms  consecutively. This creative personality actively participated in the great liberation war in the year 1971.

Mahfuz Anam started career as a journalist of English Daily the Bangladesh Observer in the year 1972.Later performed responsibilities as Assistant Editor of Bangladesh Times. He received Jefferson Fellowship of United States in the year 1976 in Journalism. Talented personality Mr. Mahfuz Anam performed responsibilities with competence in Paris, New York and Bangkok for 14 years at UNESCO. He was holding significant positions like that of ‘Regional Media and Public Affairs representative’ (Bangkok) of UNESCO. Resigning from the employment of United Nations, he joined the Daily Star established by internationally reputed journalist-editor S.M. Ali and later was placed as  Editor of the Daily Star.  

Expressing opinion despite adverse situations in favor of safeguarding public interests and strengthening of democracy, Mahfuz Anam is uncompromising in writing spirited editorials with objectivity on basic rights. His timely political columns, commentary received wide popularity amongst readers. His very minute analysis of Politics of Bangladesh, social systems, passing of life of mass-people amazes everyone.  Mahfuz Anam is the publisher also of Weekly 2000; popular Bangla weekly;
and Anandadhra; a decent entertainment fortnightly.

Mahfuz Anam plays principal role in the area of arrangement of appropriate trainings, running research-works, seminars, meetings etc., for press workers of developing world. His contributions are very significant on media related policy issues. Recently he received National Environment Award 2009.
