| The Government created the Privatization Commission as special agency in March, 1993 and opened up investment in power generation, transmission and distribution, natural gas and oil exploration, the telecom sector, port and container services, operation of private sector airlines in the domestic regional and international routes gradually. |
| Recent studies on sect oral reform had identified suitable privatization prospects in both the Road & Highways and in Inland Water Transport. Contracting out the existing operations and maintenance functions of these organizations is an immediate promising possibility. |
