With momentum, originated from attachment and sense of responsibility to the country, those a few economists who perform responsibilities as Governors of Central Bank, Dr. Atiar Rahman is one of them. His, another special variation with others- he was on the whole a son of a common poor peasant family. Descendant of a common poor peasant family of most primitive, backward village today has become an extraordinary personality by dint of own talent and virtue of work, before performing responsibilities as Governor of Bangladesh Bank he was appointed as professor of development studies of Dhaka University. Though the basic profession was teaching, he has different kinds of research work on the economy of Bangladesh. He was also Chairman of two different research institutions called ‘Samannaya’ and ‘Unnayan Samannaya’. The descendant of a backward family of neglected class of the society Dr. Atiur was born in a solitary village of Jamalpur district. Father was a poor landless peasant. He did not have the ability to carry on his schooling at the primary level due to very low resources. As a result at Class III he dropped out from schooling, later dramatically returned back to School. He attained the pride to stand first by appearing at examination with three months’ preparation. His self- confidence went up. He started studies afresh. During leisure family work and alongside school work, he became attentive in the midst of both. Completing primary education during the run, he got himself admitted into the Dighaipat Junior High School. His uncle was a teacher of that school. During his schooling life, while at Class VII, he showed the advertisement for admission into Cadet College. Later under his direct, personal supervision, he passed Cadet College Admission Test. During the start-up period of the Cadet College schooling, monthly tuition money even used to be collected from donations raised at hats i.e., village market places. Later knowing about the problem the authority arranged scholarship. From that pace of advanced life which began at Mirzapore Cadet College he never again went apart, stood 5th in SSC in Dhaka Board. Later more new successes were added. With post graduation degree in Economics from Dhaka University, Atiar accomplished PhD from London. Dr. Atiar Rahman was Director of state owned Sonali Bank, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Janata Bank and performed responsibilities as Senior Research Fellow of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). He had significant roles in expansion of small loan activities in Bangladesh. After taking up responsibilities as Governor of Bangladesh Bank, he took special steps to boost up lending in agricultural sector and let the same reach the hands of the genuine farmers. Announcements were made to provide lending to sharecroppers during his tenure. He issued various directives for raising investments in agricultural sector by Private Commercial Banks. During his term country’s foreign exchange reserve crossed the high 10 billion dollar. One of the examples of his farm friendly policy is the directive to open separate agricultural as well as SME branches by the scheduled Banks. Dr. Atiar Rahman is dedicated in realization of   the dream of the reflection of the agro rich robust Bangladesh as caught in his awareness, carefully brought up during his childhood. He wants to extend services to the farm system of the country by performing responsibilities as Governor of the central bank. He has special awareness about environment.
